Lily dropped to her knees and grabbed Delia, embracing her tightly. Delia started to cry into Lily’s shoulder, and Lily sobbed quietly as she gently rocked her.
Time passed slowly as they started to come to terms with what had happened. Lily picked Delia up, and carried (you’d think so, wouldn’t you) her as she walked backed to the house.
Lily checked the cars parked in front of the house, but none were damaged. She wondered why, and decided that the monsters would not have wasted time or alerted those inside by damaging them, and didn’t need to after.
“Stay here,” Lily said, as standing Delia on the ground, “I’ll be right back.” Lily went inside the house, trying to keep her eyes away from the worst of the gore. She searched through pockets, taking sets of car keys. After she found a few, she went back outside to pick a new car.
Lily picked a small car with a nearly full tank of petrol. It had belonged to the Jones family, people she had barely known. She got Delia to sit in the passenger seat, and filled up the car with supplies taken from inside, and she sat the rifle beside her.
“Where are we going?” Delia asked Lily as she turned the car on.
“Somewhere safe, Dealy. Somewhere safe.”
Lily had no plan, she just drove. She hoped that she’d find somewhere safe, well-defended, but she doubted it. Even with a gun, and many strong men, they hadn’t stopped those creatures. She thought about going into the city, but then she realised something – the monsters would be wherever people were, wherever they would go.
If she stayed outside of the city, stayed away from towns and kept moving around, maybe they had a chance.
