The Seekers of Dytja

Trying my hand at more ‘straight’ world building – ie., just mapping out stuff without some kind of narrative device beyond ‘explain it’. I might be doing this wrong, heh.

The Seekers of Dytja

The Seekers of Dytja are the descendants of a group of warriors and scholars sent out to find Dytja, long ago. This group was sent out from a land she had left several thousand years ago, and they were tasked to find her – no matter how long it took. When Dytja had been in that land, a great darkness had ruled it. Alone but for the help of a few brave souls, Dytja had defeated it. She had promised that should it rise again she would return – but she would need to be found and told of its return, as she was no goddess. The Seekers discovered in their search that Dytja had travelled far. Even when the darkness was defeated again one hundred years later, the Seekers had yet to find her.
The original Seekers had long since died and passed their mission on to their children and grand-children by this point. When they were told forty years later – in small groups at a time, as they had travelled in all directions – that the darkness was defeated, many decided to continue their search. Over the years some had already elected to stay behind, spreading their number throughout the land.
As the search continued, the Seekers expanded. Almost all lands they came to had legends of Dytja, growing ever more recent. This common thread made them welcome far from their original homes; and sometimes members of their searches would settle, or take others with them on their journeys. Eventually each search would split, to better cover the lands further out as they travelled.
The knowledge the Seekers possessed – maps and routes across great distances – combined with their wide spread to make them natural messengers, covering a titanic span (greater than the size of the Earth, by a lot). Some groups of Seekers also split off from the ‘normal’ aims of the organisation, becoming more akin to cults worshipping Dytja (much to the chagrin of the rest).

In each land they travel to, the Seekers spend some time uncovering local legends and stories that may relate to – and often explicitly mention – Dytja. Working with Seeker groups in lands on either side of themselves, they attempt to piece together Dytja’s movements and actions.
They have long since determined that Dytja is travelling in a counter-clockwise spiral out from a central point (not the far away homeland of theirs she saved), and they are, in all directions, drawing ever closer to regions she has recently (within the past fifty years) visited. They also know many other things – such as where she has failed, fled or avoided trouble, where she has doubled back, and how much time she usually spends somewhere.
Many other mysteries have also been resolved by the Seekers – they know more of the world’s history (even often finding out the truth behind myths and legends of various lands) than any others. Except, perhaps, Dytja – whom they know bravely delves into even the most dangerous of ruins, and can read scripts no living soul can read.
